Tonsil Trouble? Decoding Those White Spots

Seeing white spots on your tonsils can be alarming! But what do they actually mean? Often, they're a sign of infection or inflammation. One common culprit is strep throat, a bacterial infection characterized by sore throat, fever, and, yes, white spots. Tonsillitis, another infection (viral or bacterial), can also cause these spots, accompanied by pain and difficulty swallowing.

Sometimes, the white spots are actually tonsil stones (tonsilloliths). These form when debris gets trapped in the tonsil crevices and hardens. While usually harmless, they can cause bad breath and a gritty feeling. Oral thrush, a fungal infection, can also present as white patches, though these often appear elsewhere in the mouth too.

If you notice white spots on your tonsils, it's important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment. They can determine the underlying cause and recommend the appropriate course of action, whether it's antibiotics for bacterial infections or antifungal medication for thrush. Don't try to self-treat – professional guidance is key for a speedy recovery!
