Tinnitus and the VA: Decoding Your Disability Rating

That persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears? It could be tinnitus, a common condition among veterans. If you developed tinnitus during or after your military service, you may be eligible for VA disability benefits. Understanding the "tinnitus VA rating" is key.

The VA rates tinnitus based on severity and its impact on your daily life. Importantly, tinnitus is rated at 10% maximum per ear, and the VA doesn't combine ratings for bilateral tinnitus exceeding 10%. The rating is often determined by an audiological exam.

To increase your chances of a successful claim, document everything! Keep records of your symptoms, any hearing tests, and how tinnitus affects your work, sleep, and overall well-being. Consult with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) – they can provide invaluable assistance navigating the VA system and building a strong claim. Don't let the ringing drown out your right to benefits.
