Don't Get Rattled! A Guide to South Carolina's Venomous Snakes

South Carolina's beautiful landscapes are home to a variety of wildlife, including several venomous snakes. Knowing how to identify them is crucial for safety. Six species call SC home: Copperhead, Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin), Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Timber Rattlesnake, Pigmy Rattlesnake, and Coral Snake.

Copperheads are the most common, identifiable by their distinctive Hershey Kiss-shaped markings. Cottonmouths, often found near water, have thick bodies and can exhibit a white, cotton-like lining in their mouths when threatened. Rattlesnakes, of course, are characterized by their rattle. The Eastern Diamondback is the largest and most dangerous. Pygmy Rattlesnakes are much smaller but still venomous. Finally, the Coral Snake, with its red, yellow, and black bands, requires careful identification (red on yellow, kill a fellow; red on black, venom lack).

Remember, it's best to admire these creatures from a safe distance. If you encounter a snake, give it space and avoid provoking it. Knowing the snakes in your area and practicing caution can help you safely enjoy South Carolina's natural beauty.
