Gingivitis, that pesky gum inflammation, isn't always caused by the same culprit! While we often associate it with poor oral hygiene (plaque!), there's a whole other side to the story: non-plaque-induced gingivitis.
**Plaque-induced gingivitis** is the classic case. Bacteria in plaque irritate the gums, leading to redness, swelling, and bleeding. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings are your best defense.
**Non-plaque-induced gingivitis**, on the other hand, arises from other factors. Think fungal, viral, or bacterial infections (besides typical plaque bacteria). It can also be triggered by systemic diseases, allergic reactions, medications, or even nutritional deficiencies. These forms often require specific treatments beyond just brushing and flossing.
Knowing the difference is key! If good oral hygiene isn't resolving your gingivitis, it's time to see your dentist to identify the underlying cause and get the right treatment.
