Non-Pitting Edema: What's Going On Under the Skin?

Ever press on swollen skin and it *doesn't* leave a dent? That's non-pitting edema, and it's different from the more common type where a finger impression remains. Understanding this distinction is key to figuring out what's causing the swelling.

Non-pitting edema often indicates a problem with your lymphatic system, the network responsible for draining fluids from tissues. Conditions like lymphedema, caused by damage or blockage in the lymphatic system (often from surgery, radiation, or infection), are frequent culprits. Other possibilities include myxedema, associated with severe hypothyroidism, where the skin thickens and swells.

Unlike pitting edema, where excess fluid is simply in the interstitial space, non-pitting edema involves fluid that's often mixed with proteins and other substances, making it less easily displaced. If you're experiencing swelling that doesn't pit, consult a doctor. Accurate diagnosis is crucial to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
