Uh Oh! Glucose Down? How to Handle Low Glucose Levels Like a Pro

Feeling shaky, sweaty, or just plain off? It could be low glucose levels, also known as hypoglycemia. This happens when the glucose (sugar) in your blood drops too low, leaving your body without the fuel it needs.

For people with diabetes, low glucose can be triggered by too much insulin, skipping meals, or intense exercise. But even those without diabetes can experience reactive hypoglycemia after eating a sugary meal.

So, what should you do? The 15-15 rule is your best friend: Consume 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates (like juice, glucose tablets, or hard candy), wait 15 minutes, and then check your blood sugar again. If it's still low, repeat the process.

Once your glucose levels are back to normal, eat a small snack containing both protein and carbohydrates to help stabilize them. Listen to your body, be prepared, and talk to your doctor if you experience frequent episodes of low glucose. They can help you determine the underlying cause and create a personalized management plan.
