Late Period? Decoding the Wait: When to Test for Pregnancy

That late period can spark a flurry of emotions! But before you jump to conclusions, knowing when to test for pregnancy is key. Testing too early can lead to inaccurate results and unnecessary stress.

Generally, it's best to wait until at least one day after your missed period. However, for more accurate results, waiting a week after your expected period is ideal. Many home pregnancy tests boast high accuracy, but the amount of hCG (the pregnancy hormone) in your urine increases over time, making detection easier.

If you're unsure when your period was due, test 21 days after unprotected sex. Feeling impatient? Some highly sensitive tests claim to detect pregnancy a few days before your expected period, but these can be less reliable.

No matter when you test, always follow the instructions on the test carefully. If you get a negative result but still suspect you're pregnant, wait a few days and test again. A blood test at your doctor's office offers the most accurate results and can detect pregnancy even earlier than home tests. Good luck!
