Is Watermelon Good for Dogs? A Paw-some Summer Treat!

Summer's here, and that means juicy watermelon! But can your furry friend enjoy this refreshing fruit too? The short answer is YES, watermelon is generally safe and even beneficial for dogs, but with a few precautions.

Watermelon is packed with vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as potassium, which are all great for your dog's health. It's also mostly water (about 92%), making it a hydrating treat on hot days.

However, the rind and seeds can be a problem. The rind is difficult to digest and could cause gastrointestinal upset. Similarly, while a few seeds might not hurt, large quantities can lead to intestinal blockage. Always remove the rind and seeds before offering watermelon to your dog.

Cut the watermelon into bite-sized, seedless pieces to prevent choking hazards. Remember, watermelon should be given as a treat in moderation, not as a meal replacement. Too much of any treat can upset your dog's stomach. So, go ahead and let your pup enjoy a slice of summer with this healthy and refreshing fruit! Just be sure to prepare it safely.
