Is your little one fussy and struggling to sleep? Swaddling might be the answer! This ancient technique mimics the feeling of being held in the womb, promoting calmness and longer, more restful sleep. But how to swaddle a baby correctly is crucial for their safety and comfort.
First, lay a square blanket in a diamond shape. Fold down the top corner. Place your baby on their back, with their shoulders just below the fold.
Next, bring one arm down and across their chest. Take the side of the blanket on that same side and pull it snugly across their body, tucking it under their opposite arm and back.
Then, fold the bottom of the blanket up and over their feet, leaving room for them to bend their legs up and out (hip-healthy swaddling!).
Finally, bring the remaining side of the blanket across their body, tucking it in. Make sure the swaddle isn't too tight; you should be able to slip two or three fingers between the blanket and their chest. Always place baby on their back to sleep, and stop swaddling when they start showing signs of rolling over, usually around 2-3 months.
Happy swaddling, and sweet dreams!
