Ever wondered how those terrifying twisters, tornadoes, are born? It's a fascinating, albeit destructive, process! The key ingredient is a powerful thunderstorm, specifically a supercell. These storms have rotating updrafts called mesocyclones.
But rotation alone isn't enough. For a tornado to form, this rotating air needs to tilt from horizontal to vertical. This happens when changes in wind speed and direction occur with height – a phenomenon called wind shear. This creates an invisible, rotating tube of air.
As the mesocyclone intensifies, this rotating tube gets pulled upwards by the storm's updraft, tightening and speeding up. Eventually, a funnel cloud descends from the storm cloud. When this funnel touches the ground, BOOM! You have a tornado. While meteorologists are getting better at forecasting these events, predicting exactly when and where a tornado will touch down remains a challenge. Stay safe and informed during severe weather!
