Period Poop Predicaments: Why Does My Period Give Me Diarrhea?

Ugh, periods. As if cramps, bloating, and mood swings weren't enough, many women experience another unwelcome guest: diarrhea. But why does this happen? It all boils down to hormones, specifically prostaglandins.

During menstruation, your body releases prostaglandins to help your uterus contract and shed its lining. However, these hormone-like substances can sometimes overstimulate other muscles in your body, including those in your intestines. This overstimulation leads to faster bowel movements and, yep, you guessed it, diarrhea.

Other factors can contribute too! Increased anxiety or stress related to your period can also upset your digestive system. Dietary changes and even changes in your activity levels can play a role.

While period-related diarrhea is usually mild and temporary, lasting only a few days, it can be super annoying. Stay hydrated, eat bland foods, and consider over-the-counter remedies like Imodium. If it's severe or persists, chat with your doctor to rule out any underlying issues.
