Decoding the Scratch: Spotting the Symptoms of Cat Scratch Fever

That adorable purring machine just gave you a playful scratch. No big deal, right? Usually not, but sometimes a scratch or bite from a cat infected with Bartonella henselae can lead to Cat Scratch Fever (CSF). Knowing the symptoms is key to early detection and treatment.

The most common sign is swollen lymph nodes near the site of the scratch, often in the armpit, neck, or groin. This swelling can be tender and painful. You might also experience fatigue, headache, fever, and occasionally, a blister or small bump at the scratch site itself. In rare cases, CSF can lead to more serious complications affecting the eyes, brain, or other organs.

While CSF is usually mild and self-limiting, lasting a few weeks, it's important to consult a doctor if you suspect you have it, especially if you have a weakened immune system. Early diagnosis can help prevent complications. So, enjoy your feline friend, practice good hygiene (wash scratches and bites!), and keep an eye out for these tell-tale symptoms.
