Decoding Influenza B: What You Need to Know

Influenza B, often playing second fiddle to its more infamous cousin Influenza A, is still a significant cause of seasonal illness. While both strains cause respiratory infections, Influenza B primarily circulates among humans, making its transmission dynamics slightly different. Unlike Influenza A, which can undergo major antigenic shifts leading to pandemics, Influenza B evolves more gradually.

This slower evolution, however, doesn't make it harmless. Influenza B can cause symptoms similar to the flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Young children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to complications.

The good news? The seasonal flu vaccine typically covers both Influenza A and Influenza B strains. Vaccination remains the best defense against infection and helps reduce the severity of symptoms if you do get sick. Stay informed, get vaccinated, and protect yourself and your community from the flu!
