How to Know If You Have Tonsil Stones

Ever feel like there's something stuck in the back of your throat, but you can't quite cough it up? Maybe you've even coughed up small, white (or yellowish) pebbles that smell… less than pleasant? You might have tonsil stones! But how can you *know* for sure?

Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, are hardened deposits of bacteria, mucus, and debris that collect in the crevices of your tonsils. Not everyone has symptoms, but common signs include: bad breath (halitosis), a sore throat or feeling like something is stuck, visible white or yellow lumps on your tonsils, difficulty swallowing, and even ear pain.

While not usually dangerous, tonsil stones can be annoying. If you suspect you have them, check your tonsils in a mirror. If you see small, whitish deposits, that's a good indicator. Persistent bad breath without other obvious causes is another red flag. If you're experiencing significant discomfort or difficulty swallowing, it's always a good idea to consult a doctor or dentist for diagnosis and treatment options. They can confirm if those pesky pebbles are indeed tonsil stones and advise on the best course of action to keep your throat happy!
